- John Dewar was born in Scotland, son of John Dewar and Emily Knight. He married Jane W. Somerville and they had five children. He was a teacher for some years and then studied for the legal profession. He was appointed Clerk of the Peace and Crown Attorney for Halton County. He was a member of Milton Town Council. In 1887 he built the Dewar Block at the north west corner of Main Street and Martin Street. This photograph was taken from "Milton Semi-Centennial 1857-1907".
