Hugh Foster was born in Ireland in 1794 and came to Canada in 1816. He married Jane Coates and they had five children, one son and four daughters. His second wife was Sarah Ann Center. Hugh and Sarah had one child, a son. Hugh Foster was a cooper by trade. With Henry Huffman he purchased the south side of Main Street for its entire length from Bronte to Ontario Streets for the purpose of land development. He died in 1858.
